Joomla Blog Posts from Around the Web (week 27)

joomla-week-27Here are some interesting Joomla blog posts I found during week 27.

This week, you'll have the first part of a series on Joomla 1.6 from joomla.org, posts about the Joomla! Community Magazine and some posts about free Joomla! templates.

There is also a post about automated mobile device template switching in the new version of sh404sef, and more!

Enjoy!

sh404SEF version 2.0 released with new functions and reworked interface

sh404sef-logoToday, Anything Digital announced the immediate release of sh404SEF version 2.0, Release Candidate 1.

This version is the first major version of the extension since Anything Digital and the lead developer Yannick Gaultier started working together last year.

The version released today is a release candidate (RC1), and should work well for most sites. It is fully backwards compatible with sh404SEF v1.5 in case you need to roll back for any reason.

Video: Interview with the people behind sh404SEF

sh404SEF guys interviewI'm here at the J and Beyond conference in Wiesbaden, Germany. Among the people I've met at the conference are the people behind the Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URL extension sh404SEF.

I met with lead developer Yannick Gaultier and CEO Victor Drover of Anything Digital for a chat about the upcoming version of sh404SEF. Yannick is based in France and Victor is in the U.S. They started working together last year after Yannick almost quit the project due to his day-time job. Yannick has now quit his day-job to work full time as a developer with Anything Digital.

How to fix $live_site missing error in sh404SEF

If you're using sh404SEF, you have probably seen the alert which says:

WARNING: $live_site missing from Joomla configuration.php file!

It stands out in bold, red letters - but what does it really mean? And how do you fix it? Read on for enlightenment.

Joomla Meta Tags (part 3): sh404SEF

sh404sef-logoThis is the third part of a series of posts on how to work with meta elements in Joomla.

Meta tags are tags, or meta elements, that (mostly) contain information about the website or page which is not shown directly to the user. In this part I will show you how to use the meta tag functionality in sh404SEF to improve your site SEO.

If you have the SEF (Search Engine Friendly) component sh404SEF installed, the meta tag management is more flexible than with the built-in Joomla solution. You will be able to enter meta tags for any page on your site. This involves for instance that you may enter meta elements for blog and section views, as well as for following pages automatically generated from these views (i.e. page-2, page-3 etc).

New version of sh404SEF (1.5.5)

sh404sef-title-settings

Anything Digital has released a new version of the SEF URL component sh404SEF.

Today's release of sh404SEF (V 1.5.5) has a full set of settings to customize the layout of your page title (at least for Joomla regular content). The default values are the same as the those for urls, but now you can change it to your liking.

The new version also includes a new layout and most importantly the new "similar urls" suggestions section.

Tip: How to link to Joomla articles

A short tip showing you the best way to link directly to Joomla articles when using SEF URLs (search engine friendly URLs).

Joomla Meta Tags, part 2: Built-in Functionality

Joomla Meta Tags, part 2: Built-in Functionality

This is the second part of a series of posts on how to work with meta elements in Joomla.

In the first post, I looked at what meta tags are and how to use them. Now, we will be more concrete, delving into the how-to of setting up meta tags with Joomla.

Joomla tutorial: Create SEF URLs with ChronoForms and sh404SEF

ChronoForms and sh404SEFI know many of you out there struggle with this one. When using the SEF extension sh404SEF, it's quite easy to set up search engine friendly URLs. For the core joomla components and supported third-party extensions, that is.

If your extension does not have a plug-in for sh404SEF, you're basically stuck. Unless you apply some sort of work-around. In this case, I will show you how to create SEF URLs that show forms created by ChronoForms. It's easier than you would think.
