Let's get it right and plan for the future

Written by Brian Teeman

We are not that long away from the scheduled release of Joomla 3.5, the next LTS (Long Term Release) and at this point in time I believe we really should not be looking at adding any game-changer features. My understanding, and hope, is that by the time we release 3.5 it should be a rock solid release and will need little more than minor maintenance and security releases for the rest of the release's life.

What about new stuff?

A high level Road Map exists, finally, but it doesn't dictate, or even suggest, for which release we should be aiming for with those features. If we truly want to achieve the aim of 3.5 being both "long term" and "stable"  then we have probably already passed the point in time where we can add big new features.

MaxBiz2 - A Simple Joomla 3 Business template

Written by Anthony Olson

After the re-release of the Vision Joomla template last week I thought I would take another stroll down memory lane and update the MaxBiz template. We originally released MaxBiz in the middle of 2008 and while it was a pretty straight forward theme with relatively limited functionality and colour schemes it proved to be quite a popular choice for folks looking for a versatile Joomla Business template.

Elegant and understated

MaxBiz2 retains the simple elegance of the original design but adds a lot more control over the layout and visual styling. While I'd still class this design as somewhat of a starter theme (like our Zen Building Block series) there is a lot more that can be done with this theme straight out of the box. It's midway between a skeleton and one of our full releases so I think it will suit those of you looking for a Joomla template with a bit of class but is not visually overwhelming.

Last week we looked at how JCal Pro® 3 has integrated Twitter Bootstrap through Joomla 3 in order to provide a responsive, mobile first experience.  In this second post of the series on JCal Pro® 3 - the Joomla Calendar - we perform a detailed examination of an important administrative feature, configuring email notifications, and how this relates to managing registrations.  Make sure to read to the end for some great pointers on how notification emails can supercharge your marketing efforts.

The JCal Pro® 3 Email Manager provides extremely powerful and flexible calendar email notification system.

The Email Manager provides advanced features we are examining such as:

It began in melodramatic fashion with Michael Buffers trademark phrase:

But we weren’t at a boxing match in Las Vegas. We were attending the CMS showdown hosted last week in Milwaukee by Web414.  The showdown featured a group of panelists each showcasing their CMS in 3-5 minutes including:

  • Sitecore - Nick Wesselman (Hanson Dodge)

  • WordPress - Brad Parbs (Snow Day Group)
  • Drupal - Kevin Cieselski (Red Beard Unlimited)

Joomla Optimization: Consider Deploying a CDN

Page loading times on your website are important for a number of reasons. Not only can slow pages frustrate visitors and cost you conversions, but the search engines also take an interest in your page loading times, meaning slow-loading pages can affect your SEO. If you have a website running on Joomla, one option you might want to consider to improve your page loading times is to deploy a Content Delivery Network (CDN).

What is a CDN?

A CDN consists of a number of optimized servers located all over the world. These servers work together to distribute content, which includes downloadable objects, JavaScript files, applications and more. The basic principle is that when someone visits your website, their data comes from the server that is located nearest to them, significantly increasingly page load times wherever they are located in the world.

I’m happy to announce that our JSN ImageShow 4.6.0 has been released. There are some improved features I’m sure you will like.

Disabling new signups for a few days...

Written by by Fotis Evangelou

If you haven't yet understood why, let me clarify...

The K2 Community is a very popular site. It's got an Alexa rank of about 10.000 and a 7/10 Google Pagerank. It does a little over 1 million page views per month on average. Spammers love such facts. Not spam bots, actual human spammers.

The past 2 weeks we are being heavily spammed by real human beings with regular Joomla!, Twitter or Facebook accounts (you need a mobile number to get a FB account and bots don't have mobiles). Not mention this has happened again (back when we hosted the community site on the Ning platform which is supposed to have a much better platform to fight spam)... Guess when? When effing Iron Man 2 was released. Spammers love blockbusters.
