JED 3 Contract Announcement & Development Progress

Written by Matthew Baylor

In August of 2013, the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) Team put out a Request for Proposals looking for developers interested in designing a new Joomla 3.x component to manage JED listings. The JED Team also released a list of JED 3.x Requirements outlining the required functionality needed for the component.

Nine proposals were submitted and the JED Team narrowed the list down to three submissions based on scope, viability and the timeframe to complete the project. The final three candidates were interviewed by members of the JED Team who determined that Fabrikar had the best solution.

On behalf of The JED Team, we’d like to thank all of the developers who submitted proposals. I’m pleased to announce that the contract between OSM and Fabrikar has been negotiated and signed by both parties.

Introducing RocketTheme's New Website

Written by Ryan Pierson

RocketTheme's main site has been updated to include a new, streamlined user interface that makes it even easier to take advantage of all it has to offer.

We have been working hard to create what we believe to be the best possible user experience for our customers. This includes completely overhauling the cart system, adding new purchasing options, and extending our level of support to include a giant library of documentation that makes it easier than ever to get up and running with your new template or extension for Joomla, WordPress, phpBB3, or Magento.

Many of these updates come from requests made by our community. Features like the single-template purchase option, extended documentation, a more flexible payment system for International customers, and corporate-friendly printable invoices are all features that are now part of our core user experience.

After DOCman 2.0, FILEman 2.0 will also get a complete responsive gallery view. The new design will make the gallery look great on all devices, including mobile.

FILEman 2 is the next release major release we are working on. With FILEman 2 we are dropping support for Joomla 1.5 at the same time the FILEman core is being refactored to make use of Joomlatools Framework 2.0,  the next major iteration of our extension framework.

Additionally we also reworked the templates to make it easy for designers to style the gallery and make it blend nicely with their templates. Here is an overview of the changes we are working on.

How to rename htaccess.txt when using SEF urls in Joomla

Written by Paulus103

The ability to create search engine friendly urls has been available since the release of Joomla! 1.5. Joomla provides two methods for creating search engine friendly urls. The default option is without mod_rewrite which means that the urls still contain the index.php reference in the url. The second option involves removing this reference via the use of Apache mod_rewrite.

To enable url rewriting in Apache, the htacces.txt file needs to be renamed and there are several steps to follow.

How to check PHP memory limit for Joomla 3

Written by Paulus103

A frequent problem seen on our Joomla Forum is a site running out of memory and generating an error like this - “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of XXX bytes exhausted”. This error means that the hosting set-up is not able to provide enough memory for the site to run correctly and often causes a white screen to be displayed.

The first step in troubleshooting this issue is working out how much memory is available to the site.

This tutorial looks at how a user can find out the PHP memory limit.

Exclusive maintain your Joomla sites like a boss with remote updates for JCE plugin

Written by Vic Drover

One of the most popular add-ons for Joomla is JCE, the Joomla content editor.

While JCE itself can be installed using the normal Joomla installer, JCE plugins must be installed and updated from with JCE itself … until now!

They said it couldn’t be done but the engineers at Watchful went to work and came up with a great solution.

Working closely with JCE developer Ryan Demmer, they developed a unique solution that currently supports updates for seven JCE pluggins including File Manager, Image Manager Extended and Media Manager.
