Nooku presentation from Nooku Jam Stockholm 2011 [VIDEO]

nooku-jam-illAs you might remember, I went to the first ever Joomla Night Stockholm earlier this year. While there, I also attended the Nooku Jam session with Johan Janssens and other members of the Nooku team.

I filmed Johans presentation about what Nooku is and how it can help developers. I finally got around to editing and publishing the complete video to YouTube. So, now you can sit down, grab a cup of coffee - or a beer ;) - and learn a bit about the Nooku framework in this 35 minute presentation.

Matias Aguirre needs help finishing Joomla! 1.5 to 1.6 migrator [Interview]

Matias Aguirre needs help finishing Joomla! 1.5 to 1.6 migrator [Interview]

In October 2009, I wrote a blog post about migrating a Joomla! 1.5 site to version 1.6. I gave it the ambitious title of Migration from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6 will be easy. And it probably will. When the script is ready.

However, Joomla 1.6 was released this week without a migration script in place. When I started to look at the state of this script, it seemed everything stopped back in 2009. Apparently, there was little interest from developers to create this script.

After some digging, I contacted Matias Aguirre, the one who started the original discussion around a Joomla 1.6 migrator script. He responded immediately, and I got some more info on the script. Matias has been working on a script called jUpgrade. It's partially working, but he needs help finishing it.

10 things to know about Joomla and the iPad

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about the Apple iPad. The iPhone big brother arrived a few weeks ago, and Apple has sold a huge number of devices already.

The iPad is already a success, and as a device for consuming information it's really great.

So how does this relate to your reality as a Joomla user? In short: You need to make sure that your Joomla website works on the iPad. And not just that it works. It should be a delight surfing your website on the iPad.

Giving the Blog a Face Lift

yootheme-template-phoenixYesterday, I changed the template for this blog. After some tweaking I changed it from the SolarSentinel template from RocketTheme to the new Phoenix template from Yootheme.

Wasn't happy with the load time on the former template, and I had some issues with SuperBlogger. Also, I feel that the SolarSentinel template gave a somewhat "heavy" impression, and wanted a lighter feel to the site.

Besides that, wanted to test out the new Warp framework YooTheme has implemented in the Phoenix template. It's allegedly much faster than earlier iterations of their template framework.

Fun in the Snow

I've received quite a few emails from readers wishing me a Merry Christmas. Thanks a lot, guys!

A few of them asked if there's snow here. And indeed it is :) During the last 3 days it's been snowing a lot. Not sure exactly how much, but it's probably over 50 cms (approx 20 inches).

I've created a small video, using my new Flip MinoHD Camcorder . Lots of snow has nothing to do with Joomla, except that it's fun!

Google Analytics asynchronous tracking Joomla plug-in

freshClicksGAAIf you use Google Analytics to track your website traffic you should read this. Google Analytics now provides a new Asynchronous Tracking Code snippet as an alternate way to track your website.

Think of the asynchronous tracking code snippet as a script that uses a "separate lane" to handle part of the processing of your webpage. As the number of cars (or in this case, scripts on your webpage) increases, the asynchronous tracker uses this lane to reduce webpage load time. Websites that use many scripts or rely on rich media content will especially benefit from this new method, but even lightweight sites will see improvements.

Joomla™ Users - Make a Difference!

msf-fundraisingFellow Joomla blogger Brian Teeman has started a fund-raising initiative to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

I want to join him in his efforts and I hope you as a reader will find that this cause is one (of many) which will help people who find themselves in danger.

Brian has chosen Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Doctors Without Borders, as they are an international, non-denominational, non-political humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 80 countries.

Joomla is Truly International

Had a look at my blog stats today, and found that people are reading my blog from 126 countries! The spread is quite good.

Check out the picture to see where readers come from. I think this is great - and shows that Joomla is globally used and enjoyed.

Should you be using a hosted webshop with Joomla?

ecwid-illA few weeks ago, I got a question from one of my readers regarding the ecommerce solution Ecwid and Joomla.

The reader wanted to know if this web shop solution was a good one to use with a Joomla site.

To be honest, I hadn't heard about Ecwid before, so I decided to take a look.
